(Op and I disagree about this car, just sayin’.)
Is there a term of art for the metalwork quilting in the back of this car? That metal looks pretty malleable. Do you think it might be aluminum?

Yeah, it’s probably aluminum.
Thinking about going a little wild with your P71?

Wouldn’t that be more interesting than a replacement fender that doesn’t fit like the original? And way more fun? Bonus: I love pop rivets. (To your question, Yes. )

I had a long discussion, more transmit than receive, with Missus last night about my automotive dreams and what I really want from any car and most things, is that they be an expression of myself. You’re a creative, hands-on guy, so I imagine you can relate. Bolting on a fender would be a poor expression.

I fully support this plan. I say rivet away!

Lol, boy have I had some of those “more transmit than receive” conversations.
Anyways, I agree. Go for it!

With you transmitting about your creative solutions and ideas and aspirations?

In case you need solid rivets, Aircraft Spruce seems to carry them and the tools. I want to learn to use solid rivets some day.

I would be using pop rivets. Love those

Reminds me a bit of the rear flares on this car..but also i’ll take any excuse to post a picture of a widebody Toyota Corona on a race track..

I tried to find out after you raised this question in the last post. I can find lots of references to quilted metal but it’s all patterned stamped sheet rather than assembled pieces, which looks kinda cool but isn’t what you mean. Asked the guys in our machine shop and the best they could come up with was “patchwork” which doesn’t really describe it either.
It is a nice piece of detailing t hough - the car as a whole still doesn’t do it for me but I’m not going to diss their effort and workmanship.

That car takes my breath away. Except for the awful striping...
Patchwork seems a good word...

The way those patches look, it’s almost as if they were lead because they look like they were so malleable . Perhaps there is a type of aluminum that is softer.

Those headrests look painful, but at least they don’t friggin’ lean forward.

I think this is an art piece a bit more than it is a car, though it’s been driven, judging by the looks of the exhaust headers and the tires.
